Target Audience
Emergency medicine physicians, stadium physicians, team physicians, sports physicians, advanced medical life support and equivalent healthcare providers.

The FIFA Emergency Sports Medicine Course has been developed in order to upskill, educate and train healthcare providers who are involved in the provision of mass gathering medical services at sports events, from the school sport’s day to a major sports stadium premier event. The basic principles of life threatening injury and illness prevention, management and transfer, within the sporting environment, in one or multiple patients, is presented from experience and knowledge gained over many years from many sources and in particular from five FIFA World Cup tournaments. The workshop is interactive, practically orientated and meant for all those who have a passion for such medical duties and activities.

Life threatening medical emergencies discussed:

  • Sudden cardiac arrest
  • Acute anaphylaxis
  • Acute exercise-induced bronchospasm
  • Acute chest pain
  • Acute hypoglycaemia
  • Heat illnesses
  • Neck/spinal injury
  • Tonic/clonic seizures
  • Lightning injuries
  • Hyponatraemia 

Practical medical skills training/demonstrations:

  • Insertion of oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal airways
  • Insertion of laryngeal tube airways (LMA)
  • Manual 4 x hand / 2 x hand manual resuscitator (BVM) use
  • Use of automated external defibrillators (AED)
  • Field-of-Play cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) management
  • Use of SAM splint for fracture immobilization
  • Use of spinal board, head immobilizer and spider harness strapping
  • Delivery of high quality CPR, running of a perfect mechanical automatic CPR pit crew deployment and intrathoracic pressure regulation therapy
